Background: As more victims of the Kampuchean conflict poured across the border into Thailand, a special ceremony took place on Sunday (3 February) at one of the many refugee centres in the area. A new Buddhist temple was inaugurated at the Sakeo camp, where more than 30-thousand Khmer Rouge refugees are accommodated.

SYNOPSIS: Deliveries of food and medical supplies remain uncertain at the refugees remain uncertain at the refugee camps. Guerrilla activity in the border areas has delayed shipments to the under-nourished people of Kampuchea.

These Buddhist monks arriving at the Sakeo camp were on a special mission - the inauguration of a new Buddhist temple. Sponsoring the project is Major-General Chana Samudavnija, Chairman of Thailand's Committee of Volunteers.

The Committee of Volunteers is starting new cultural, educational and religious projects at the camp. Thousands of Buddhist devotees, including newcomers to the camp, where there to observe an historical ceremony.

The ceremony was led by Somdej Phra Yana Sangvora, the Senior Abbott of the Temple Borvornivies.

The opening of this Buddhist temple was especially significant. The refugees who were under the control of the Khmer Rouge leadership have not been allowed to take part in religious ceremonies like this since the Pol Pot regime took power in Kampuchea in nineteen-seventy-five.
