    Roll Three is of the nearest thing I could find to a shanty town around Ndola when I was first planning this story. Though it is not really a shanty town, its occupants are squatters and here they have built traditional-type huts, though they have no water or sanitation.

FOR A NOMINAL FEE AND GUIDANCE FROM LOCAL AUTHORITIES, THE PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO BUILD INITIALLY A HOME OF ONE BEDROOM, ONE LIVING ROOM, AND A KITCHEN.

    THE MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND HOUSING HOPE THAT A TOTAL OF 6,000 HOUSES WILL BE BUILT IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS OF THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN.

    PROSPECTIVE HOUSEHOLDERS ARE GIVEN A PLOT WITH ACCESS TO A DEPOT OF ROOFING AND BRICKS. A SIMPLE HOME SHOULD COST 180 STERLING IF THE WORK IS DONE BY THE FAMILY. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO OBTAIN LOANS OR THE ROOFING AND AFTER THE HOUSES ARE BUILT, HOUSEHOLDERS WILL PAY 1 15 SHILLINGS STERLING A MONTH TOWARDS A LEASE ON THE PLOTS.

    FIRST OF THE SCHEMES TO GET UNDER WAY IS AT NIKOMFWA TOWNSHIP NEAR LAUNSHYA - A START TO OVERCOME THE SQUATTER PROBLEM AND THE SLUM SHANTY TOWNS OF ZAMBIA.
