  • Description

A new page in the history of divided Berlin was written today when the East Berlin authorities allowed nearly 4000 football fans to crows in to the West Sector to watch the East German team meet Chile in a World Cup qualifying round came. It was the first time that such a large number had crossed in to West Berlin since the construction of the infamous "wall" and the vistors were able to watch their national team draw 1-1 with the South American side.

Travelling in three special underground trains, the East Berliners tent direct to the West Berlin Olympic Underground station were they walked the quarter mile from he station to the Stadium entrance ignoring students handing out leaflets protesting against the Chilean junta.

Although many carried East German flags, enterprising souveniex sellers did a good trade with smaller East German flags whilst other vistors clusored around the buy badges and other world cup mementos.

By special permission of the Allied three power ground, the East German flag was flown over the stadium for the duration of the game - a congestion not normally allowed.

Afterwards. the East Germans walked the quarter mile back to their trains and returned to the East German side after their brief excursion in to the West. But on June 22, an even larger number will travel to Hamburg when East and West Germany clash in what promises to the match of the World Cup Series.
