Background: In the European Soccer Cup competition, Albania's Partizani Tirana caused a surprise when they beat the Scottish champions, Celtic, by one goal to nil, on Wednesday, (Sept 19) in Tirana, the Albanian capital.
SYNOPSIS: It was the first leg of the first round in the European Cup.. one of Soccer's premier competitions. Celtic, in the hooped shirts, their traditional colours, were the first British club to win the European Cup, 12 years ago, in 1967.
34 minutes into the first half came the only goal of the game. From a corner, Tirana's Agim Munari scored with a far post header...
The game was watched by 25,000 Albanians.. but only a handful of Scots were there to see their team defeated. Albania's government refused to grant entry visas for newsmen or fans.
According to reports, Tirana dominated for most of the game, and allowed Celtic few chances.
Football experts say that Partizani Tirana are an obscure club,. and among other top European sides they don't rank very high. Celtic are one of six former winners of the European Cup in this year's competition. Despite Tirana's one-nil surprise win, Celtic are expected to move on to the second round, after the return leg match in Scotland.
