On May 5, American ambassador Adlai Stevenson announces that an Organization of American States peace mission has secured a cease-fire agreement in the political struggle under way in the Caribbean nation, the Dominican Republic.
Stevenson said that American intervention had two aims: (1) to protect lives, and (2) to give the inter-American system a chance to deal with a situation which is within its comprehend.
Stevenson said American forces are not in the Dominican Republic to intervene in that country's internal affairs or for occupation purposes. He said, " it is obvious that only the American presence there has made it possible for the O-A-S to organize its consultations and to take its proper place on the scene.
Stevenson said the O-A-S should be allowed to continue its efforts without interference.
Early on the morning of May 6, the O-A-S met in Washington and voted to create an inter-American military force to restore peace and constitutional government to the Dominican Republic.
