Background: The West German Foreign Minister, Herr Walter Scheel, today (Tuesday) called at the Palace of Carthage in Tunis to see President Habib Bourguiba. The German Statesman is on a private visit to Tunisia, during which he has also held talks with his counterpart, M. Mohamed Masmoudi.

Economic and cultural relations between West Germany and Tunisia have always been firm--and Tunisian sources say that exchanges with West Germany come in fourth place in their import/export negotiations, after France, the U.S.A., and Italy.

SYNOPSIS: The car carrying West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel, arriving in the courtyard of the Palace of Carthage in Tunis on Tuesday. Herr Scheel was accompanied by his Tunisian counterpart, M. Mohamed Masmoudi, with whom he had earlier held talks.

Inside the Palace, President Habib Bourguiba warmly welcomed the West German statement. Although Herr Scheel is on a private visit, his talks with the Tunisian leaders undoubtedly centred on the long-standing economic and cultural ties between their two countries. West Germany ranks fourth in import/export relations with Tunisia--after France, the U.S.A. and Italy. The Germans supplying primarily machinery and electronic equipment, Tunisia reciprocating with oil, phosphate, wine and native crafts.
