Background: Citizens of Paris and its suburbs paraded through the city streets in force yesterday (Thursday) in protest at the rise in public transport prices. It was the fifth such demonstration within 18 months.
The latest increase, announced last Friday (20 August) raised the price of a single ticket for a bus or Metro underground railway journey by over 18 per cent.
The demonstration was organised by left wing political parties, both socialist and communist, and by the big Labour Union groups. The number of non-political organisations also lent their support to the protests.
