Background: The eighty-eighth birthday of Mahatma Ghandi. Father of the Indian nation, was celebrated enthusiastically the whole country over.
His memorial, Raj Ghat, in New Delhi, was the scene and centre of celebrations and ceremonies in his memory. A notable visitor was Mr Nehru, who lead a tremendous crowd in prayers. He took part with the congregation in singing holy songs and some of the Mahatma's favourite hymns.
After the religious service, Mr Nehru headed a queue of thousands to pay his respects and lay flowers on the "samadhi", and later took part with hundreds of there in aspiring programme.
The celebrations sent on from the early hours of the morning until late into the night.
