Background: GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY), WILL DISMANTLE BARRICADES AND ROADBLOCKS THEY SET UP DURING THE RECENT INTER-COMMUNAL CLASHES ON THE STRIFE-TORN ISLAND. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN AUTHORITIES OF THE TWO COMMUNITIES FOLLOWED FOUR DAYS OF NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN BRITISH, GREEK AND TURKISH OFFICIALS.

THE BID TO RESTORE COMMUNICATIONS AND FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE ISLAND MEANS THAT BY TOMORROW NIGHT MOST OF THE HASTILY ERECTED BARRICADES WILL HAVE BEEN PULLED DOWN. GREEK AND TURKISH POLICE AND ARMED IRREGULARS OF BOTH SIDES WILL RELINQUISH THEIR POSITIONS, AND ONLY BRITISH TROOPS WILL REMAIN ARMED AND AT THE READY IN CASE OF ANY NEW OUTBREAK.

FOLLOWING ON AGREEMENT IN CYPRUS TO EASE TENSIONS BETWEEN TURKS AND GREEKS, TALKS BEGIN IN LONDON ON MONDAY, (JANUARY 13), BETWEEN BRITAIN, GREECE AND TURKEY ON THE ISLAND'S FUTURE. THEY WILL BE FOLLOWED LATER IN THE WEEK, PROBABLY WEDNESDAY, BY A FULL CONFERENCE WITH GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS JOINING IN.

IN THE MEANTIME, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME, THE PRIME MINISTER, HAS WARNED THAT A POLITICAL AGREEMENT ON CYPRUS MUST BE REACHED QUICKLY. HE SAID THAT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN CIVIL WAR IN CYPRUS IN BRITAIN HAD NOT ACTED QUICKLY. SIR ALEC SAID THAT GREECE AND TURKEY WOULD HAVE INEVITABLY BEEN DRAWN INTO THE FIGHTING AND NOT EVEN NATO OR THE UNITED NATIONS COULD HAVE ACTED AS PEACEMAKER WITH ANY HOPE OF SUCCESS.
