Background: 'The World's Unknown Soldiers Killed in World War Two' are remembered in a memorial built at Kyoto, Japan, by the Ryozen Kannon Kai-- a religious foundation.

Comprising a 14 ft. by 5 ft. marble monument, surmounted by a statue of Kannon--the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy---- this memorial was unveiled on June 8th. Dedicated to the Unknown Warriors of the World it also commemorates the 49,145 foreign servicemen killed on Japanese soil during that war. Among the guests were representatives of the Ryozen Kannon Kai, the Japanese Government, and the Governments of the United Arab Republic, the Dominican Republic, Holland and several other countries.

To a Buddhist choir and the tolling of the nearby Ryozen Kannon temple's ceremonial bell the veil was drawn aside, revealing the startling white monument. The Ryozen Kannon Kai north plan to build the stupa--- a kind of Buddhist tower--containing urns filled with earth from the World War battlefields and war shrines around the world.

The inscription on the monument runs;- all honour to him, friend or foe, who fought and died for his country! May the tragedy of his supreme sacrifice bring to us, the living, enlightenment and inspiration; fill us with the over-mounting zeal for the all-compelling quest of peace, World peace and universal brotherhood.
