Background: In Angola the left-wing government of Dr. Agostinho Neto has sponsored a crash programme to educate the country's young. The programme includes the principles of Marxism-Leninism.

SYNOPSIS: The name of Angola's ruling party: 'The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola is one of the first things young Angolans learn to write. The new education programme is designed to overcome the country's massive illiteracy problem. Before independence from Portugal, over 80 percent of Angola's six million inhabitants could not read or write. Two years later, the government claims to have educated 100,000 children and workers.

Education in the rules of spelling accompanies instruction in the principles of 'Marxism-Leninism', the political doctrine officially adopted by the Angolan government at a Congress held in the capital of Luanda at the end of last year.

It is not only the students who are learning. The teachers, too, are new to this work. Many, like this worker from a local brick- making factory, have been recruited from other jobs. The teachers are trained in crash courses which last only four months. Despite that the authorities estimate that Angola desperately needs another 25,000 teachers.

By 1980 the Angolan government says it hopes to be able to give basic schooling to all children reaching the age of compulsory education, including the Communist doctrine-'a long term aim of the Republic'.
