Background: THIS WEEK INDONESIA HAS BEEN CELEBRATING ITS 19TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY. YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), THE ANNUAL INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE WAS STAGED IN THE CAPITAL, DJAKARTA. UNLIKE FORMER PARADES ON INDEPENDENCE DAY IN RECENT YEARS, THIS ONE DID NOT STRESS INDONESIA'S MILITARY MIGHT. NO JET AIRCRAFT ROARED OVERHEAD AND THE NUMBER OF TROOPS FILING PAST THE REVIEW STANDS WAS SMALLER THAN USUAL.

THE PARADE'S MAIN THEME WAS 'BOOSTING PRODUCTION' AND FOR TWO-AND-A-HALF HOURS IT PASSED PRESIDENT SUKARNO AND HIS GUESTS, PRINCE SIHANOUK OF CAMBODIA AND HIS WIFE. INCLUDED AMONG THE DETACHMENTS OF TROOPS, WERE WOMEN'S UNITS, INCLUDING CABINET MINISTERS' WIVES, DRESSED IN THE JUNGLE GREEN UNIFORM OF THE INDONESIANS VOLUNTEERS. THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY WAS WELL REPRESENTED, AND A GROUP PASSED BY THE PRESIDENT WITH THEIR CULTIVATING MACHINES. YOUTH ORGANISATIONS AND WORKERS' GROUPS WERE ALSO FEATURED. ONE FLOAT REPRESENTED THE FILM INDUSTRY IN INDONESIA.

PLACARDS AND SONGS URGED PEOPLE TO STOP RICE IMPORTS AND CHANGE THEIR DIETS. A 'FARMER BRIGADE' THREATENED TO CRUSH LANDLORDS, WHOM PRESIDENT SUKARNO ASKED THE DAY BEFORE IN A BIG SPEECH, TO GIVE UP THEIR LANDS. OTHER TARGETS FOR THE SLOGANS AND SONGS: 'MALAYSIA', 'BRITISH AND AMERICAN IMPERIALISTS.'
