Background: A new super-container terminal -- Hongkong's first -- was opened in the colony on Wednesday (6 August).

Construction of the terminal has been seriously delayed by recent heavy rains, but the handling machinery was able to unload the world's largest container ship, the Tokyo Bay, on the opening day.

Site construction costs ran as high as eleven million sterling. The most modern equipment in the world has been installed to shift containers between the docks and the clearing terminals.

Containers are lifted to and from the ship by two hitachi gantry cranes and on shore by twelve straddle carriers operating within the terminal grounds.

A fleet of fork-lift trucks and mobile cranes also ensures rapid smooth cargo handling.

By 1937, Hongkong's new container terminal expects to be moving about 70,000 containers -- about 1.4 million tons of cargo.
