Protestors held a silent vigil outside the Polish embassy in Lisbon on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (12 to 13 January). The protest was organised to mark the end of the first month of martial law in Poland. People held placards, burnt candles, and lit bonfires to keep warm during the protest. It was organised by the Socialist-backed trade union organisation, UGT. The Communist Party and its allied union confederation, CGTP - Intersindial, did not take part, saying the situation in Poland was an internal problem to be resolved by the Polish people.
