KYPRIANOU: "The purpose of my visit to Athens is to exchange views with the Greek Prime Minister Mr Karamanlis in relation to the Cyprus problem in view of the recent developments. It was natural after my re-election to the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus to come to Athens and exchange views with the Greek Prime Minister on questions of common interests and concern and, especially, the Cyprus question, especially in view of the agreement we have reached with Secretary General of the United Nations regarding the resumption of intercommunal talks and, especially, also in view of the fact it was agreed a meeting should take place some time in March between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish Prime Minister on matters which affect relations between Greece and Turkey. These are new developments, and in the light of these new developments it was thought natural and necessary to come to Athens to exchange views with the Greek Prime Minister."

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Dr Kurt Waldheim, recently visited Cyprus, Turkey and Greece in an attempt to get talks between the Greek and Turkish-Cyprint communities re-started. At the talks next month, Mr Ecevit and Mr Karamanlis are to discuss Cyprus, plus other issues of contention between the two nations, particularly territorial rights in the Aegean sea. Mr Ecevit has promised to submit concrete proposals on a settlement to the Cyprus problem by the end of February. He was Prime Minister at the time of the Turkish invasion which left the island divided with some 29,000 Turkish troops occupying 40 per cent of the island.
