Background: Disgraced former Chinese Communist Party leader Zhao Ziyang has been cleared of charges of counter-revolution, a reliable source said on Thursday (January 23). The government immediately denied the report from a source close to Zhao's former right-hand man, Bao Tong.

The report said that a special party committee cleared Zhao of charges of splitting the party and supporting student-led demonstrations crushed by the army around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989. It said the internal party investigation's results were announced at a top-level party meeting last month.

Zhao was elected Chinese premier in September 1980. A highpoint of his career was his meeting with U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington in 1984. He met North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung in Pyongyang in April 1989 as pro-democracy student protests gathered force. Zhao was last seen in public addressing students in May 1989, and was stripped of all his party posts soon afterwards.
