Background: VISNEWS filmed May 10 at St. Mary's Church, Weybridge, Surrey the wedding of Julie 'My Fair Lady' Andrews to her childhood sweetheart Mr. Anthony Walton. This 'quiet country wedding' to which only 300 had been invited attracted over 2,000 well-wishers.
Five hundred people packed themselves into the 97 year old church for the 35 min. ceremony conducted in a heat wave temperature. At times it seemed as if the bride might faint.
As the happy pair emerged from the church to the strains of the Wedding March they faced a battery of over 60 photographers. The enormous crowd broke through the police barrier and surged around the couple as the entered their car.
The reception was held at the Mitre Hotel beside the Thames at Hampton Court. It took the bridal car over 15 mins. to drive the four and a half miles than along a poute lined with cheering people.
Among the guests from the Drury Lane show in which Miss Andrews is the star, were Stanley Holloway who plays Doolittle and Robert Cootes who plays Colonel Pickering. Miss Andrews said she would have liked to invite all the cast but there were too many.
Other invited guests included Noel Harrison, son of Rex Harrison the show's original Professor Higgins. Noel said he was most angry at the suggestion that his father had boycotted the wedding. Speaking of his father and his wife Kay Kendall, he said: "They would have loved to have come here but could not make it. They have work to do." Sandy Wilson for whose show 'Valmouth' the bridegroom designed the sets, was also present.
Miss Andrews wore a GBP350 dress of white silk organza, nylon and nylon tulle which was designed by her husband.
In the evening the couple flew off for their honeymoon in California. They will return on May 25 - the day Miss Andrews is due to resume her part of Eliza Doolittle in the show.
