Background: The Chad playwright and author, Boba Moustapha, won the first prize in this year's Inter-African Drama Competition, organised by the French broadcasting organisation, O.R.T.F. The competition was first held in 1967. Its purpose is to encourage French language playwrights working in black Africa and the Malagasy Republic.

Mr. Moustapha was presented with his prize -- a cheque for 200,000 c.f.a. (approximately GBP 340 sterling) -- by the French Ambassador to Chad, M. Raphael Touze, during an informal ceremony at the Ambassador's residence in N'Djamena. The prize also included a year's scholarship course in France.

Also present at the ceremony were M. Dikwa Garandi, the Chad Minister of Education and Culture, and M. Brahim Seid, the Minister of Justice in Chad.

In presenting the prize to M. Moustapha, M. Touze reminded the audience that M. Moustapha was not a newcomer to the competition. Plays he had entered in previous years had been selected for broadcast by the O.R.T.F. -- "A Difficult Marriage" in 1969, and "The Master of the Djinns" in 1971.

M. Garandi thanked the Ambassador and said he hoped M. Moustapha would continue to have similar successes in the future. He also thanked the French Minister of cooperation -- who was not present -- for the scholarship he had granted to the Chadien playwright.

SYNOPSIS: A presentation took place at the French Ambassador's residence in N'Djamena, capital of Chad, last Wednesday. Monsieur Baba Moustapha, one of Chad's foremost playwrights, received from the French Ambassador, Monsieur Raphael Touze, the first prize he had won in this year's Inter-African Drama Competition. The competition is organised by the French broadcasting organisation O.R.T.F., to encourage French language playwrights in Africa.

The prize included a cheque for the equivalent of about three hundred and forty pounds sterling, as well as a year's scholarship course in France. Also present at the informal ceremony were the Chad Minister of Culture, Monsieur Dikwa Garandi, and the Minister of Justice, Monsieur Brahim Seid. In previous years, two of Monsieur Moustapha's plays were selected from the competition for broadcast by the O.R.T.F.
