Background: This is one of the new machines used in rafting timber. All the hard work is now done automatically. His job is limited to determining the required size, and then pressing a button. Logs of the desired length are selected with the help of a photo-eye. As the logs pass before the opening, their number and total volume are tallied up. The movement of every log is constantly followed by a relay system. Here you see the special mechanism in operation -- and a log is rolled of the conveyor into the water. Large and smaller logs pass right by, but those of the required length fall into the proper, section. A meter shows when there is sufficient timber in a given section. Then the sorted logs are bound together. Tied together securely, the logs are now ready to be rafted downstream.
