Background: A man accused of attempting to murder Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was remanded in custody in New Delhi on Tuesday (15 April). The accused, a 37-year-old textile worker named Ram Lalwani, is alleged to have made the attempt on Mrs. Gandhi's life by hurling a spring-blade knife at her.

SYNOPSIS: The knife-throwing incident was reported to have happened when Mrs. Gandhi left the grounds of Parliament House after laying a wreath at the statue of the late Harijan (untouchable) leader, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, on the 89th anniversary of his birth. Mrs. Gandhi finished her speech at the ceremony and was walking towards a waiting car when the knife was thrown at her. Police reports said the knife, with a four-inch (about ten centimetres) blade, missed the Indian leader, hit a security official and fell to the ground without injuring him. Police overpowered the attacker and took him away for interrogation.

After the accused man, Ram Lulwani, was taken into custody, five more people were arrested in connection with attempted murder.

The five men, arrested in the city of Baroda, included a deputy mayor reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI) to be a member of the former opposition Jan Sangh, a Hindu nationalist party. Another was the older brother of the accused who was said to work as an engineer in Gujarat state's public works department. The reports said police and intelligence men were in Baroda studying the background of the accused. Lalwani's father said his son had no political links at all.

Ram Lalwani was taken into a New Delhi magistrate's court on Tuesday (15 April) where he was remanded in custody until April 24 charged with the attempted murder of Mrs. Gandhi. His defence alleged that Lalwani had been beaten by police on Monday (14 April) and the court ordered that Lalwani be examined by a police surgeon at his own cost.
