IT IS PART OF AN ECONOMIC UNION WITH THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, THE CONGO REPUBLIC AND GABON, THE OTHER STATES WHICH, WITH CHAD, ONCE FORMED FRENCH EQUITORIAL AFRICA. CHAD IS ONE OF SEVEN MEMBER STATES OF THE FRENCH COMMUNITY AND BELONGS TO THE UNITED NATIONS.

    ITS POPULATION IN 1962 CONSISTED OF TWO-AND-THREE-QUARTER MILLION AFRICANS AND FIVE-THOUSAND EUROPEANS. THE POPULATION OF THE CAPITAL, FORT LAMY, TOTALS 45,000.

    THE PRINCIPAL EXPORTS ARE LIVESTOCK, COTTON, FISH, AND GROUNDNUTS. RICE AND MILLET ARE ALSO PRODUCED AND THERE ARE DEPOSITS OF TIN.
