Background: The Northseacanal connects the port of Amsterdam with Ijmuiden and is one of the most intensely used canals in Holland. Although the canal is not wide it is very deep because the big liners and transport ships starting from Amsterdam pass this canal on their traps all over the world.

For the ships there are no obstacles on their way to the sea but the existence of the canal creates the problem for the roadtraffic that has to cross this canal. At Velsen, near Ijmuiden there are ferryboats that take all roadtraffic to the other side of the canal 1/2 The growing heavy industry around Velsen and Ijmuiden increased the traffic that had to use the ferryboats considerably. To cross the Northsea canal became a problem and the ferryboats became an obstacle that harmed the industry centres across the canal. Hours were lost with waiting...............

The plans for building the Velser Tunnel date back to 1936. In the beginning of the war the work on the tunnel, was started. The Germans stopped it in November 1942 and flooded the trench. After the war they had to start all over again as the plans were out of date and the project had to be enlarged.

In 1952 the actual work started and the Velser Tunnel was finished in September 1957. In the 28th Sept. the tunnel will be officially opened by the Queen.

The costs were 130 million guilders, appr. 13 million pounds, and 350.000 m3 concrete were used. The length of the railway tunnel is underground appr. 1 1/2 mile. There are two car traffic-tunnels, because there is one way traffic.
