Background: ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT DEVOTIONAL CROWNS EVER MADE, THE GOLD AND EMERALD CROWN OF THE ANDES, GOES UNDER THE HAMMER AT SOUTHEBY'S AUCTION ROOMS, IN LONDON, TOMORROW.(THURSDAY).

IN THE POSSESSION OF AN AMERICAN SYNDICATE, THE CROWN WAS CRAFTED LATE IN THE 16TH.CENTURY BY THE PEOPLE OF HIGH ANDEAN CITY OF POPAYAN, FOR DELIVERANCE FROM THE GREAT SMALLPOX PLAGUE WHICH RAVAGED COLOMBIA FOR THREE YEARS.IT STAND 13-INCHES HIGH (33CMS), AND WEIGHS 12-POUNDS (5.5 KILOS) AND IS ENCRUSTED WITH 453 COLOMBIAN EMERALDS DONATED BY NOBLE FAMILIES OF THE DAY.

DESPITE THE TURBULENT HISTORY OF WAR, REVOLUTION AND PILAGE, THE CROWN OF THE ANDES, REMAINED IN THE CATHEDRAL OF POPAYAN, UNTIL IT WAS SOLD TO THE AMERICAN SYNDICATE IN 1936 WITH PAPAL PERMISSION.THE SYNDICATE EXHIBITED THE CROWN THROUGHOUT AMERICA RAISING HONEY FOR CHARITY, BUT FOUND THAT TRAVEL EXPENSES AND SECURITY WERE TOO COSTLY.

BROUGHT TO LONDON IN MAY IN THE HOPE OF FINDING A BUYER, THE RUMOURED PRICE-TAG OF GBP1,500,000 IS THOUGHT TO HAVE FRIGHTENED PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS AWAY.HOWEVER, THE JEWELRY EXPERT AT THE AUCTION ROOMS IS A LITTLE MORE CAUTIOUS ON THE PRICE HE EXPECTS TO GET, HINTING AT SOMETHING "UPWARD OF GBP50,000.
