    At a special one day conference at the United Nations on Monday (5 November) member countries pledged two hundred and ten million dollars in aid for famine-stricken Kampuchea. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim who presided over the conference said he was gratified by the response of world governments. At the conference United States Ambassador Donald McHenry said the immediate problem was to get relief to the people while Vietnam's Ha Van Lau said the situation was being exaggerated.

    SYNOPSIS: Dr. Waldheim called the Kampuchean issue 'one of the great tragedies of our time'.

    Vietnamese Deputy Ambassador Vorh Tuan described his country's view of the Kampuchean situation more fully. He said Vietnamese government had sent one hundred and twenty thousand tonnes of food, ten thousand tonnes of grains and rice seem to Kampuchea. Vorh Tuan also said that medical supplies, farming equipment and other utensils to the value of fifty million American dollars had been sent by Vietnam to Kampuchea.
