Background: INTRODUCTION: In the French National Assembly elections on Sunday (14 June) the Socialist Party, led by newly-elected President Francois Mitterrand, was poised to lead the country's left-wing parties to their biggest win in French political history.

SYNOPSIS: In the first round of the election the Socialists and their left-wing allies took close to 40 per cent of the vote, and most computer predictions showed they were headed for an absolute majority in the assembly after Sunday's run-off vote. Overall the left-wing parties took 55 per cent of the vote, despite a slump in Communist support to 16 per cent.

Still the Communists control France's largest trade union group, the C.G.T., and Mitterrand's Socialists are due to enter negotiations with the Communists to secure their support. Meanwhile the centre left parties of France are surveying the damage after Sunday's results, and preparing for a week of campaigning aimed at bringing back nearly 30 per cent of French voters who stayed away from the polls on Sunday. The second round of the election will be held next Sunday (21 June).

In response to Sunday's results, the French franc lost ground, and exchange dealers said they felt the franc would become weaker in the long term. But there was none of the panic that gripped the French Stock Exchange after last month's Presidential elections, which swept M. Mitterrand to victory.
