Background: In Buenos Aires on Tuesday night (November 20), former President Juan Peron held the first meeting with political leaders since his return to Argentina last Friday (November 17), after 17 years in exile.

The meeting - held in a centra restaurant - was attended not only by members of the Justicialists Party (the Peronistas official name), but also by those of other parties, including Socialist Leader Coral and Radical Leader Dr. Hector Balbin. The most important of the two being the letter who, as the candidate of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), controls the second largest political force in Argentina after the Justicialistas.

Dr. Balbin and Sr. Peron had held a private 55-minute meeting the previous evening Although that was the first time they had met personally, the two men were not strangers. Dr. Balbin was a presidential candidate in the 1951 elections - in which the then General Peron was re-elected with 55% of the vote. Dr. Balbin was also among those most persecuted for opposing the Peron regime. Dr. Balbin is the UCR candidate in next March's presidential elections - in which the Peronistas still hope Sr. Peron will be their candidate, in spite of the fact that he did not return to Buenos Aires before the August 25th deadline set by the Government for all the candidates to register personally in Argentina. The 68-year-old Radical candidate certainly has a better chance of winning if the 77-year-old ex-President does not run.

As the meetings took place, crowds of Peronistas chanted and jostled outside, as they have done outside Sr. Peron's house since his arrival - although the majority of them are too young to remember the remember the so-called "Golden Years" of Peronism (1946-1955).
