Background: AT SEA, OFF CENTRAL AMERICA

President Alvaro Magana of El Salvador has paid a brief visit to the United States aircraft carrier 'Ranger'. The ship is part of a fleet of nineteen U.S. warships sent to the Central American waters as a display of military power in the face of what President Reagan sees as spreading Soviet influence in the region. The El Salvadorean leader saw a mock-combat display during the three-hour visit to the craft which is lying some 100 kilometers (65 miles) off the west coast of Nicaragua. The Sandinista government there has condemned the exercises as threatening, and say Washington is attempting to de-stabilise the area. President Magana's forces have been fighting a three-and-a-half year battle with left-wing guerrillas, and the USA has been the government's chief supplier of arms and ammunition. Tension in the area has risen since the exercises began, but Washington has reiterated their claims of Soviet influence in the region. President Reagan has set up a commission on Central America to draw up a long-term policy for the area. He's been meeting opposition within the US congress in his attempts to increase military aid to the region. President Magana was impressed by the display on board the aircraft carrier, and told the marines he was glad they were on his side.
