Background: Iraqi planes flying at low altitudes bombed the city of Ilam in Western Iran on the morning of June 5. Streets were filled at the time with supporters of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini commemorating popular uprisings caused by his arrest under the Shah's rule twenty years ago. Iranian authorities estimated at least 40 people died and 150 were taken to local hospitals, while survivors searched through the rubble for lost relatives and belongings. According to Iranian sources, the raid caused more casualties than any other similar Iraqi operation against Iran in more than a year. Iraq has stepped up its military attacks since Iran regained the key port of Khorramshahr on May 24. According to foreign military observers, the bombing of Ilam increases the chances of Iranian retaliatory action against Iraq.
