Background: In a bruising heavyweight fight in London (5th December), the British Heavyweight boxing champion, John l. Gardner beat American challenger Greg Sorrentino in seven rounds.
SYNOPSIS: The British champion, Gardner is in the black shorts and facing the camera. Gardner, superbly fit is relentless in attack. This was his first fight since winning the British title and Gardner had said before the bout that we wanted people to be proud of him.
Gardner has been criticised by the British press for his unscientific style and his lack of effective punching. But in this the fourth round he had the American Sorrentino backpedalling.
Sorrentino's coach, Carmen Basilio watches as Sorrentino and Gardner tangle in centre ring. It had been a bruising fight. Both men were tired. But Sorrentino seemed to be making his most determined effort. His punches though were not hurting the British champion.
Round Seven and almost from the opening bell, Sorrentino is in trouble. Gardner scored with two sharp right hands to Sorrentino's jaw and Sorrentino wilted ... and it was only a matter of time before a knock-out
Sorrentino showed great courage, but finally forced back in his corner by Gardner, referee Roland Dakin and Sorrentino's coach Basilio moved at the same time to stop the fight. For John L. Gardner his first successful defence of his heavyweight title.
