Background: Rhodesia's largest and most popular game reserve, Wankie National Park, has what is believed to be the world's only airport to be run by women.

Three girls - with occasional help from a fourth - take care of all landing arrangements for aircraft, disembarking of passengers, and transportation of them and their luggage to the nearby hotel. They also take tourists on trips around the reserve.

In charge is Mrs. Gillian Lincoln, supervisor of both the airstrip and the accompanying hotel. She is assisted by Miss Elizabeth Webb and Mrs. "Pebs" Williamson. When things get particularly busy, they enrol the help of a fourth girl, Robyn Scott, who normally works at nearby Victoria fells.

The four women are employees of a touring company which Air Rhodesia was appointed its agent at the airport, and they've been running Wankie airport since December. Only the control tower is staffed by men.

The game reserve, which is near the Wankie colliery where 419 miners died in last June's disaster, is becoming increasingly popular as an international tourist attraction. Two flights arrive at Wankie each day and on Sundays there are four..... all packed with visitors.

With operations spread between airport duties, and the care of tourists at the Safari Lodge Hotel, the girls find they have little time off-duty. But Mrs. Lincoln says they have no complaints: "The work is too fascinating," she said.
