Background: Rumania's President Nicolae Ceausescu arrived at Damascus, Syria, on Thursday (24 April) for an official visit to discuss the Middle East situation with Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad.
President Ceausescu who arrived from Bucharest said tension still reigned in the Middle East and the situation was highly explosive. President Assad had earlier told him that efforts towards a just peace had made little progress.
President Ceausescu, speaking at an official dinner, added that diplomatic activity was the important and basic element for achieving peace in the region, and the resumption of the Geneva Peace Conference and expansion of representation there were also essential elements in achieving peace.
He went on to say that all world powers should support efforts towards that end whether they were represented in Geneva or not.
President Ceausescu who was due to visit Cairo on Friday also said peace should start with an Israeli withdrawal from all the Arab territory it had occupied in 1967. It should also include a solution of the Palestinian problem, providing for an independent Palestinian state.
