Background: ATLANTIC OCEAN, OFF SOUTH AFRICA

Thirteen sailors were missing from the South African frigate President Kruger following a collision with its supply ship during an Atlantic storm on Thursday (18 February). The accident occurred 78 nautical miles southwest of the Cape of Good Hope during night training exercises. The anti-submarine frigate was holed in the collision, but the tanker Tafelberg was able to take part in the rescue operation after her damaged bow was sealed. The 2,380 tonne President Kruger was the flagship of South Africa's small navy and had a crew of 190. Some injured survivors were evacuated by helicopters to a Cape Town military hospital. Vice Admiral Edwards of the South African Navy said the search would continue in the hope of finding the missing men alive.
