    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

On the first day, the England pace attack of Bob Willis, John Lever and Chris Old bowled all but 13 of the day's 69 overs and they worked their way steadily through India's batting. The bowlers were backed by outstanding fielding.

    (TRANSCRIPT):

GREIG: "Well I'd like to think so, but I'd be little hesitant saying yes, because last time round we won the first test match and we thought we'd turned the corner then. Then we lost the second test match, so it would be a bit silly of me to say definitely that's the case. We've got our limitations, certainly, we've also got some fine players, as have the Indians. But we're very happy, we're one-nil up. As far as we're concerned -- as far as my team's concerned, that's gone and forgotten; that's in the bank and what matters now is this match, and I suppose we can really only look into that question at the end of the tour you see, because when we finish in India we're going down to Sri Lanka and....then we're going on to Australia so, by the end of the tour the chaps I've got with me would have had a pretty good group type of cross section of bowling against them. If they've come through the Indian tour against the spinners and then they perform creditably against the pace in Australia they know pretty much everything, so that's the time to judge that I think."
