Background: Visnews filmed Jan 30-31 the end of the first round of consultations of party leaders with President Giovanni Gronchi of Italy in a bid to find Italy's 20th post-war Prime Minister.

Among those consulted were Raffaello de Caro (Liberal Party); Achille Lauro (Monarchist); Giuseppe Saragat (Democratic Socialist) and Pietro Nenni, Socialist and director of the State-controlled Petroleum Commission.

Two former Presidents of the Republic, Senator Luigi Einaudi and Signor Enrico de Nocola also conferred with the President. Signor Einaudi is named by political observers in Rome as a possible chief outside of party polemics to lead a "committee of exploration" designed to break the present impasse.

Outgoing Prime Minister Fanfani's refusal to return to the Premiership is contributing to widely-held views that there can be no return to precarious coalition between Christian Democrats and Social Democrats.

Yesterday February 1 there was still no solution to the wee-old Government crisis. The already complicated situation was further complicated by Fanfani's resignation as leader of the Christian Democrats. Social Democrats, dividing into sub-divisions.
