Background: A VETERAN CAR RALLY WAS HELD IN PARIS TODAY (SATURDAY). SOME 40 CARS TOOK PART IN THE RUN WHICH COMMEMORATED A PARIS TO ROUEN RACE IN 1894.

THIS TIME THE HORSELESS CARRIAGES OF 50 YEARS AGO TOOK THE ROAD AT A LEISURELY PACE - MORE FITTING FOR THEIR DIGNITY IN 1966, BUT THE DRIVERS AND THE SPECTATORS WERE JUST A ENTHUSIASTIC.

WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 35 KILOMETRES AN HOUR (22 MPH) THE CARS SET OUT ON THE 123 KILOMETRE (76 MILES) ROUTE TO ROUEN. AND THERE WAS A TWO-HOUR BREAK FOR LUNCH TO FORTIFY THE DRIVERS AND REFRESH THE THIRSTY VETERANS.

THE SENIOR ENTRY WAS AN 1896 LEON BOLLEE AND THE YOUNGEST A SPRIGHTLY 1914 PEUGEOT. THE GLISTENING CREATIONS OF THE PARIS MOTOR SHOW WILL DO WELL TO EMULATE THEIR 60-YEAR-OLD ANCESTORS.
