Background: In Tunisia on Thursday (1 June), President Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba celebrated the 22nd anniversary of his return from exile, by inaugurating a new ferryboat which will serve the harbour of Tunis.
SYNOPSIS: The ceremony took place at the port of La Goulette near Tunis. President Bourguiba arrived with other officials of the Tunisian government to inaugurate the ferryboat, bought by Tunisia, for use in the port area.
President Bourguiba, who will be 76 in August, is life-President of Tunisia and on June 1st, the country was celebrating the anniversary of his return to Tunisia in 1955. He became President the following year.
Independent Tunisia is regarded as the creation of Habib Bourguiba. It was largely due to his work that Tunisia became an independent state in March 1956 after 75 years as a French protectorate. It was a time of triumph for Bourguiba who had been a nationalist leader since the 1930s, and had spent time in prison in France for his political beliefs. Now the anniversary of his return from exile is celebrated as Festival of Victory Day.
