Background: Flood waters in Uttar Pradesh in India caused havoc on Sunday (31 August), killing 45 people and causing widespread damage. The swollen Ganges River destroyed or damaged thousands of houses, and brought with it isolated outbreaks of gastro-enteritis and jaundice.

SYNOPSIS: Twenty million people are estimated to have been affected by the floods, which hit the central, eastern and parts of the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. The major rivers flooded above the official danger levels resulting in widespread disruption of rail and road communications.

There have been reports of epidemics of gastro-enteritis and jaundice breaking out in a number of areas. Nineteen people died in the epidemics, according to official reports. The Jaunpur district was worst hit by the floods. Almost one thousand villages are under water and all educational institutions and district courts have been closed, bringing the district to a virtual standstill.

This year's floods are the region's worst on record. Forty-six people died on Saturday (30 August) taking the death toll in this year's floods to 755. But as wheat is distributed to flood victims, the Ganges continues to burst its banks from Allahabad to Ballia, bringing devastation to hundreds of square miles of country-side.
