World leaders and their representatives attended the funeral of Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev, giving them the opportunity to meet the new General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party Yuri Andropov. Later Mr Andropov held a 30 minute meeting with U.S. vice-president George Bush and US secretary of state George Shultz. The new Soviet leader spent some time with China's foreign minister Huang Hua and diplomatic sources speculated this could signal a new attitude in the Kremlin's foreign policy.
