Background: A prominent Syrian Parliamentarian on Saturday (14 September) compared the Israeli occupation of Arab territories with the Nazi occupation of Europe.
Mr. Mohammed Ali al-Halabi, Speaker of the Syrian People's Council (Parliament), was addressing the opening session of the Preparatory Conference for Arab-European Parliamentary Cooperation.
He told about 150 Parliamentarians from Europe and the Arab countries that it was Syria's "inherent right to defend our territory exactly as Europe did to rid itself of the Nazi occupation."
Mr. Halabi said Syria was "fighting Zionism" to avoid "the same fate that has befallen our people in occupied territory - in Palestine and the neighboring Arab lands."
Mr. Halabi said the Syrian people would "continue to fight until Arab aims were achieved regardless of the costs and sacrifices."
The annual conference - the first was held in Paris last year - was to continue for a week. European delegates were form Holland, West Germany, Italy, Ireland, Great Britain, Belgium, France and Luxembourg. Arab nations represented included Jordan, Bahrain, Tunesia, Sudan, Syria, Kuwait, Lebanon and Egypt.
