BRIGGS: "The two main alternatives open to the delegates for consideration are either to recommend the expansion of the African Groundnut Council to embrace the producers of other oilseeds or to recommend the process for establishing an African Oilseeds Organsiation.



"The importance of oilseeds to the economies of most African countries cannot be over emphasised. For many of our countries oilseeds - in particular groundnut, cotton seeds, benniseed (sesame), and palm products represent that main sources of foreign exchange earnings as well as the primary basis for agro-allied industries."

Background: African oilseed producers met in Lagos, Nigeria during the week, to seek ways of increasing their would price. Sixty delegates from 25 countries began a three-day meeting on Thursday (August 8) to co-ordinate their sales polices as a first step towards better price for their commodities on world markets.

The Nigerian Federal Commissioner (Minister) of Trade Mr. Wenike Bridggs, spoke about the alternatives for price-raising in his speech opening the meeting.

Later in the conference a technical committee was set up to consider which was the best means of promoting trade.
