Background: THE "BRITISH WEEK" IN MILAN LOOKS LIKE BEING A HUGE SUCCESS. THE MILANESE HAVE CAUGHT THE SPIRIT OF THE TRADE FAIR WITH ENTHUSIASM AND MORE THAN A 1,000 SHOP WINDOWS ARE SHOWING BRITISH GOODS. THE CENTRAL SHOPPING AREA OF MILAN IS ABLAZE WITH UNION JACKS (BRITISH FLAGS) AND ENGLISH AND SCOTTISH POLICEMEN CAN BE FOUND DIRECTING TRAFFIC. THERE'S EVEN A LONDON DOUBLE-DECKER BUS ATTRACTING A LOT OF ADMIRERS.

THE TRADE FAIR IS AIMED AT NORTHERN ITALY'S FAST GROWING CONSUMER MARKET, AND HELPING TO BOOST THE FAIR, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH FLEW IN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY).

PRINCE PHILIP WATCHED A MILITARY TATTOO STAGED BY BRITISH FORCES IN THE EVENING. THE TATTOO INCLUDED A SPECTACULAR DISPLAY OF MOTOR CYCLING BY A TEAM FROM THE ROYAL SIGNALS AND ALSO AN ATHLETIC DISPLAY.

THE TATTOO IS ONE OF MANY ENTERTAINMENTS TAKING PLACE IN A WEEK CRAMMED WITH BRITISH EVENTS. 600 BRITISH TROOPS AND 67 HORSES REPRESENT THE ARMED FORCES, BUT IF THE MILANESE DON'T LIKE SOLDIERS THERE'S A DIARY WHICH INCLUDES A BALLET PERFORMANCE, A HORSE RACE, FOOTBALL MATCHES, A FURNITURE EXHIBITION, A COINAGE EXHIBITION, FASHION SHOWS, FILM SHOWS, AND NUMEROUS DINNERS AND RECEPTIONS. THERE'S EVEN AN ENGLISH "PUB" SELLING ENGLISH DRINKS -- BUT WITHOUT ENGLISH DRINKING LAWS.
