Background: BRITAIN AND THE INDIAN OCEAN ISLAND OF MAURITIUS OPENED CONSTITUTIONAL TALKS IN LONDON TODAY (TUESDAY) TO DECIDE THE COLONY'S FUTURE STATUS.

AMONG THOSE AT THE OPENING CEREMONY WERE SIR SEEWOOSAGUR RAMGOOLAM, THE PRIME MINISTER OF MAURITIUS WHO IS PRESSING FOR QUICK INDEPENDENCE WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH, AND MR. ANTHONY GREENWOOD, THE BRITISH COLONIAL SECRETARY.

THE MAURITIAN DELEGATION REPRESENTS THE FOUR MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES ON THE ISLAND. ONE OF THEM, THE OPPOSITION PARTI MAURICIEN OPENLY OPPOSES INDEPENDENCE ON THE GROUND THAT THE ISLAND ALONE IS NOT ECONOMICALLY VIABLE.

MAURITIUS, INHABITATED BY 730,000 INDIANS, CREOLES AND FRENCHMEN, GOT A LIMITED MEASURE OF HOME RULE AFTER TALKS IN LONDON IN 1961. LAST MAY, THE ISLAND WAS BESET BY VIOLENT RACIAL TROUBLES. UNEASY CALM WAS RESTORED BY BRITISH TROOPS.

THE MINORITY CREOLES FEAR THAT WITH INDEPENDENCE, THE INDIAN MAJORITY LABOUR PARTY WILL SUBJECT THEM TO LITTLE OR NO SAY IN THE GOVERNMENT.
