Background: Veteran actor Charlie Chaplin, aged 82, has been made a "Citizen of Honour" in Paris. Chaplin, comedy star of many silent films in the early days of cinema, was born in London, England, and found fame in the film-making town of Hollywood, in the United States. This week he was in Paris for the 'premiere' of one of his films -- 'Modern Times', made in 1935 and never released. This film is one of a series of unreleased Chaplin films to be shown in Paris -- and no-where else in the world because, said Chaplin while receiving his "Citizen of Honour" medal at the Town Hall on Thursday (November 4), "only the French appreciate my art".
SYNOPSIS: The Town Hall, Paris -- the city that gained another citizen on Thursday when veteran comedy actor Charlie Chaplin, star of the silent films, was made a "Citizen of Honour".
Chaplin, now aged 82, received his medal -- highest of the three orders of medals that can be awarded to Citizens of Honour -- and a diploma from the President of the Paris Municipal Council, Monsieur Jean Cherioux. The actor and his wife were in Paris for the 'premiere' of his film 'Modern Times' -- made in 1935 and not released until now. It is one of a number of previously unreleased Chaplin films to be shown in the City -- and no-where else in the world. For, as Chaplin claimed at the Town Hall ceremony, only the French appreciate his art.
Charlie Chaplin was born in London, England, and found fame during the early days of cinema in Hollywood in the United States. He stayed there for most of his working life, developing the art of mime to a fine point and later becoming a film producer.
