Background: A spokesman for the United States Embassy in Athens last month confirmed reports that the United States and Greece were negotiating for the establishment of a home base in Greece for the U.S. Sixth Fleet. He said the United States was considering a number of sites in various countries, including Greece.
One site reported to be under consideration is the port of Piraeus, near Athens, with its large and long-established dock facilities. It has long been a port of call for United States warships - when this film was shot, the Destroyer-Escort Courtney (DE1021) was making such a call, and docked alongside a U.S. submarine already in port.
A large force, including an aircraft carrier and six destroyers, is reported to be due in Piraeus in the next few months. But Piraeus is not the only possible "home base" in Greece - speculative reports have also pointed to the geographic and strategic advantages of a base on the southern coast of the island of Crete.
