Background: Wimbledon Champion Evonne Goolagong on Wednesday (5 July) fought back from the very edge of defeat to beat seventeen-year-old Chris Evert of the United States in their long-awaited first meeting for a place in Friday's final.

The Australian star lost the first sat and three games of the second before sta???got into the match. At this stage the young American prodding from Florida looked set to win the match. She became so confident that she came up to the net to volley more than at any other time in the tournament.

The capacity crowd of 15-thousand which had been stunned by the lack-lustre performance of Miss Goolagong was suddenly awakened and cheered the Australian on with fervour as she then took seven games in a row...a run which enabled her to win the second set and lead 1-0 in the decider.

Miss Evert showed remarkable maturity and cool temperament when the tide turned against her. She broke the champion's service continually and held her to three games all. But twenty-year-old Goolagong took the match from there, with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Miss Goolagong's opponent for the title on Friday will be three-times former champion Billie-Jean King of California. Miss King produced one of her characteristic displays of all-court skills to subdue Rosemary Casals of San Francisco 6-2, 6-4, in the other semi-final.
