Background: The body of former Untied Nations' Secretary-General U. Thant was brought to lie in state in a closed casket for 24 hours at the U.N. headquarters in New York on Wednesday (27 November).

U Thant, Secretary-General from 1961 to 1971, died on Monday of cancer. He was 65.

The casket was carried by U.N. guards form its hearse to an area inside the visitors' lobby just outside the meditation room, a dimly-lit room which diplomats use for quiet contemplation.

All day, top U.N. officials and ambassadors of several countries filed past the casket which was covered by the U.N. flag. U. Thant's only daughter, Mrs. Aye Myint U, was in the room to greet the diplomats.
