Background: Police tonight found a negro man hanging upside down from a tree with a series of six k's carved 1/4" deep into his chest. The man, Felton Turner, was taken to hospital in poor condition.
Our film shows Felton Turner on the cot in that hospital.
The six K's ranged from 1 1/2 inches to 3 inches in length and went from his chest to his stomach. There were rope marks on his wrists and ankles.
Police said Turner told them he was walking near his home in Negro residential area around 10.15pm when two masked white youths leaped from the car and grabbed him. He tried to release himself but they held him, bound him, and beat him with chains. They then took him to a wooded area where they hung him from a tree by his heels. They beat him again with chains, cut off his jacket and shirt, and then cut the K's into his stomach with a knife.
Turner told police that a red-haired youth in the front of the car told him they had been hired to do the job because of the publicity Texas Southern University Negro students had received over sit-ins at a lunch counter in Houston during the past few days.
