Background: INTRODUCTION: Restoration of several important works of art has been going on in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. On Tuesday (10 February), newsmen were shown the results of the work so far.
SYNOPSIS: This fresco by Michaelangelo shows Eleazar and Mathan, two of the ancestors of Christ. The figures are Popes frescoed by Rosselli, Ghirlandaio and others.
The Fight Over the Body of Moses, by Matteo da Lecce, was painted in the 16th century. Its restoration completes work on the Stories from the Life of Moses series. The Resurrection of Christ by Arrigo Fiammingo completes the restoration of the Life of Christ series in the chapel. The work took almost a year to complete.
This fresco by Ghirlandaio is a scene from the Life of Moses. Work on the frescoes in the chapel began in 1965 and stopped in 1974. The latest restorations complete that work.
The restorations are part of a project which, it is estimated, will take 12 years to complete. Other works due to be restored include 13 frescoes, a ceiling, and The Last Judgement, all by Michaelangelo. A special scaffolding will be used so the chapel can remain open to the public. Thousands visit here every day.
Almost one complete wall of the Sistine Chapel has now been restored to its original splendour and brightness. This mammoth restoration project is being carried out by a team headed by Pierluigi Colalucci, who is Technical Assistant at the Vatican Museum Laboratory of Restoration.
