Background: FROM THE LAND-LOCKING KINGDOM OF LAOS, VISNEWS CAMERAMAN BRINGS THESE EXCLUSIVE PICTURES OF THE LIFE AND CUSTOM OF A LITTLE-KNOWN PEOPLE AND THE ROLE PLAYED BY AN AMERICAN DOCTOR IMBUED WITH A MISSIONARY ZEAL. THIS IS MUONG SING, IN NORTHERNMOST LAOS HARDLY TEN MILES FROM THE BORDERS OF COMMUNIST CHINA, AN ISOLATED PLACE IN A COUNTRY NOTED FOR ITS LACK OF COMMUNICATIONS.

AN ANXIOUS CROWN IS WATCHING THROUGH THE WINDOW PANES OF A SMALL BUT CLEAN HUT WHICH IS THE SURGERY AND CLINIC OF AMERICAN DR. THOMAS DOOLEY, WHO HAS DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO BRING THE BENEFITS OF MODERN MEDICINE TO THE HAVE-HOTS OF THIS UNFORTUNATE COUNTRY.

DR. DOOLEY, A GRADUATE OF THE NOTRE DAME CAME TO LAOS IN 1956, PARTLY INSPIRED BY THE GREAT HUMANITARIAN TEACHINGS OF DR. ALBERT SCHWEITZER AND PARTLY INFLUENCED BY THE SUFFERINGS AND MISERY HE SAW IN THE REFUGES CAMP IN HAIPHONG (NORTH VIETNAM) IN 1955.

THERE IS AN ENDLESS STREAM OF PATIENTS EVERY DAY AT DR. DOOLEY'S HUMBLE BUT CLEAN HUT THAT SERVES AS THE CLINIC - AND A VISIT TO THE CLINIC IN LAOS, LIKE ANYWHERE ELSE, IS A FAMILY AFFAIR.

    1. NOT SURPRISING, BECAUSE FOR THE TWO MILLION LAOTIANS THERE WHO ONLY ONE DOCTOR WHO WAS A MEDICAL GRADUATE BY WESTERN STANDARDS AND HE WAS (WHEN DOOLEY WHEN TO LAOS) THE HEALTH MINISTER
THERE WERE A FEW MEDICINES INDOCHINOIS' WHO HAVE HAD A LITTLE MEDICAL TRAINING, BUT THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE DEPENDED ON WITCH DOCTORS AND THE SORCERESS.

    2. DOOLEY ALSO TRAINS UP HIS ASSISTANTS SO THAT THEY COULD CARRY ON ONCE HE LEAVES ???ANG SIGN. THE SAME WAY HE HAS DONE IN PREVIOUS CENTRES LIKE NAM THA AND VANG VIENG.

ONCE THE CLINIC CASES ARE DEALT WITH, THE DOCTOR TOURS EVERYDAY VILLAGES AROUND MUONG SING, BRINGING RELIEF TO THE PEOPLE IN PAIN. THAT IS AN IMPORTANT DAY FOR THE VILLAGE FOLK, AND ALMOST THE ENTIRE VILLAGE ASSEMBLE AROUND THE HUT WHERE DR. DOOLEY MAKES HIS INSPECTION.

THE TEAM CARRIES AN ALL-PURPOSE MEDICAL CHEST SPECIALLY DESIGNED AND PRESENTED TO DR. DOOLEY BY A MEDICAL FIRM IN THE STATES. IT'S IN ESSENCE A MOBILE DISPENSARY WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING THAT THE DOCTOR NEEDS. IT'S ALWAYS WELL SUPPLIED BY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM MEDICAL FIRMS AND FRIENDS OF LAOS EVERYWHERE.

DR. DOOLEY BELIEVES THAT IF ONE HAS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS TYPE OF HUMANITARIAN WORK, ONE MUST IDENTIFY WITH THE PEOPLE. AND WHAT HE PREACHES, HE PRACTISES. HE IS QUITE AT HOME IN A HUMBLE LAOTIAN HOME WITH HIS FRIENDS, MANY OF THEM HIS FORMER PATIENTS AND THE SINCERE FRIENDSHIP OF THE PEOPLE PUTS A FOREIGNER AT COMPLETE EASE.

BOXING IN LAOS IS INFLUENCED BY THE PATTERN IN NEIGHBOURING THAILAND AND THESE BOYS FREELY USE THEIR FEET AND LEGS AS MUCH AS THEIR FISTS.

THE ALL-PURPOSE JEEP AT TIMES SERVES AS AN AMBULANCE AS WELL... AND THE VILLAGERS GIVE HIM A "GUARD OF HONOUR" BY FRIENDLY INFORMAL HANDSHAKES WITH OUTSTRETCHED HANDS.

THE SMALL BUT CLEAN HOME OF THE DOCTOR AND HIS AMERICAN TEAM IS AN "OPEN HOUSE" FOR ANY LAOTIAN WHO CARES TO WALK IN, AND INITIAL HESITANCY OVERCOME, THIS FACILITY IS VERY OF TEN UTILISED BY THE YOUNG AND THE OLD WHO ARE CAPTIVATED BY SMALL GADGETS THAT'S PART OF LIFE IN HALF THE WORLD, BUT INSTIL SURPRISE AND INCREDIBILITY IN THIS PLACE UNDISTURBED BY THE IMPACT OF WHAT WE CALL MODERN CIVILIZATION.

THE LAOTIAN FORM OF THANKS-GIVING IS TO HOLD WHAT IS THE MOST-DEAR-TO-HEART CEREMONY: THE BACK (PRON. BAA CHEE). THE BACI IS HELD TO CELEBRATE A BIRTH, A MARRIAGE OR SOME EVENT OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AND THE PARTICIPANTS SIT IN A LARGE CIRCLE ON NEW MATS AROUND THE CENTRE PYRAMID OF FLOWER CLOSE ENOUGH TO LEAN FORWARD AND TOUCH THE BOWL WITH AN OUTSTRETCHED HAND.

SITTING WITH CROSSED LEGS IS EASY ENOUGH FOR THE LAOTIANS, BUT FOREIGNERS COMPROMISE BY SITTING WITH THEIR LONG LEGS TUCKED BESIDE THEM. THE PRIEST CHANTS HIS PRAYERS AND BESEECH THE VARIOUS GODS - GODS OF THE MOUNTAINS, GODS OF THE RIVERS, DIVINITIES OF DAWN AND DUSK, THE SPIRITS OF THE NIGHT AND DAY - TO COME AND PARTAKE OF THE FOOD LAID OUT NOR THEM. THEN PRAYERS ARE SAID FOR THE PERSON IN WHOSE HONOUR THE BACI IS HELD.

BY SPECIAL REQUEST, THE CEREMONY IS HELD IN THE DOCTOR'S HOUSE OR THAT HE COULD BE ON CALL ANY TIME...AND IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LAOTIANS TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THIS AMERICAN DOCTOR WHO HAS DEDICATED HIMSELF TO BRING THE BENEFITS OF MODERN MEDICINE TO THE READY PEOPLE OF LAOS.
