Background: A New international jumbo-jet airport is being constructed in the heart of wild-life Africa - near snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in equatorial Tanzania.
The airport, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, is being built to encourage tourists to land directly from Europe and North America. The money was provided by the Italian Government in a long-term loan.
Tourists landing at the airport will be taken to nearby Arusha, centre of the wild-life district of northern Tanzania. The district includes the famous Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Construction is expected to be complete by the middle of 1971, and it is hoped the airport will be fully operational by the end of the year.
